ARCKIT Model 13
Featuring Sydney Edwards
"The future is green energy, sustainability, renewable energy." - Arnold Schwarzenegger
Project Details
With the design lead by Sydney Edwards, her second model using Arckit focuses on a residential green home built for a couple with no children or a single resident, both with interests in living sustainably. Acting as a transition home, this design features an open multipurpose living and dining area, an overly spacious bedroom and a habitable greenspace.
We began the session going over various types of construction types and fire resistance codes. We talked about materiality and briefly got an introduction to dimensional lumber. Proceeding to the physical modeling portion, I gave Sydney several criteria to follow when designing her model.
Central Core/Utility Room
Coat Closet
Dining Room
Kitchen
Living Room
Bedroom
Bathroom
Greenspace
With this in mind, she started off with a rectangular floor plate where we would make our section cut perpendicular to the longer side.
Adding the walls, she created a small entrance hallway leading to the main living/dining/kitchen area. This space would be on the Northside and receive passive light through the large floor to ceiling windows located at each corner. Also on this floor, behind the kitchen is the central core, housing the main utilities required to keep the structure efficient. The bathroom flanks the south wall.
Heading upstairs, one passes by the greenspace to a large master bedroom with a bathroom and walk in closet.
Above is a semi exposed attic where there are compartments for storage or books, creating a elevated library surrounding the bedroom.
Overall, this model reflects the importance of smart designs in buildings with a limited square footage. By balancing the use of public vs private and open vs closed, one can create very unique and powerful designs with sustainable intent.
